Reelin' and Writin'

Congratulations to friend, comrade, and contessa of cinema Farran Smith Nehme on the publication of her first novel, Missing Reels , where the romance of the city meets the romance of old movies, tango'ing between the rich palette of the Hannah and Her Sisters 80's and the patchy, velvety monochrome of silent classics. Remarkably assured, neatly plotted, deftly paced, and charming as all get out, it may be the first novel with the churchly soul of a revival house, taking us back to the glory days when the Thalia, the New Yorker, the Elgin, and so many more theaters were running double features of Hollywood and foreign favorites, and film buffs partook of a movable feast.

Delicious Ukrainian Food in a Basement

Hidden restaurants usually fall into two categories: Those that cater to Wall Street types looking to impress on a second date, and those that don't need to advertise, because they're places so excellent and revered, word of month is all that is needed. Located just below a chiropractic office in the basement of an East Village townhouse, Streecha Ukrainian Kitchen is the latter, a place that a friend may tell you "is kind of hard to find."

Alan Cumming's Life Was No Cabaret

The actor's new memoir is equal parts heartbreaking and funny as he recalls a harsh boyhood and his journey from the Scottish highlands to Broadway When Alan Cumming arrives for brunch at a caf not far from his apartment in Manhattan's East Village, he's wearing a blue baseball cap with a big white yes on the front. It's been almost two weeks since Scotland voted no to separating from the United Kingdom, but Cumming, a Scot who campaigned heavily for the yes side from New York, hasn't quite gotten over the loss.

For the last few years New Yorkers have been obsessing on Isaan food from Thailand's impoverished northeast, an area dominated by the Mekong River and influenced by the neighboring cuisines of Laos and Cambodia.
