The New York Court of Appeals is weighing whether or not the rent-stabilized apartment of an 80-year-old East Village woman is exempt from bankruptcy seizure or constitutes an asset, according to The Wall Street Journal . At issue is whether the woman's lease is the equivalent of a public assistance benefit or any asset at all given that it cannot be bought and can only sometimes be sold .
