AFP PHOTO/Stan HONDA I clearly remember the Plainfield, Illinois F5 tornado that hit when I was in high school because I recall being shocked by how sad and random it seemed and how we high school students tried, in our own little ways, to help by rallying volunteers and money to support those affected.

Two plead not guilty in Manhattan apartment rental scam

Nonprofit hits snag in effort to sell East Village building

The nonprofit organization that runs an East Village nursing home for AIDS patients could face an uphill battle in its effort to sell its building, largely due to the terms of a deed granted two decades ago. Last month, VillageCare announced it would close its 206-bed facility at 45 Rivington Street between Forsyth and Eldridge streets, saying its services were no longer needed since fewer New Yorkers die from AIDS these days.

Review: Kitchen 79 Offers Southern Thai Dishes Unseen in NYC

For the last few years New Yorkers have been obsessing on Isaan food from Thailand's impoverished northeast, an area dominated by the Mekong River and influenced by the neighboring cuisines of Laos and Cambodia. Its most prominent contribution to the Siamese menu are the shredded green-papaya salads called somtams, but there are also beef and pork jerkies, ground-meat salads, an appreciation of sticky rice, barbecued chickens, and stir-fries highlighting river catfish, duck, and pork.

Rough Year in NYC Prompts Artist to Create 'NY Doesn't Love U' T-Shirts

After a rough year in the city that never sleeps, artist Seth Carnes has put his own spin on the ubiquitous I Love NY slogan - creating a line of T-shirts with the counter-logo "NY Doesn't Love U." The T-shirts, which feature a red slash through a black heart, were prompted by a sign spotted by Carnes, 38, that said "YOU IDLE, YOU PAY $2,000." Carnes, who moved to New York from California 12 years ago, felt that the sign said it all about NYC.
