'Rent,' a musical tale of New York in the 1980s, is coming to Faubourg Marigny

"Rent," Jonathan Larson 's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical about bohemian life in New York City's East Village during the late 1980s, will open Tuesday in Faubourg Marigny, which has been regarded as New Orleans' Bohemia. "Rent," which Larson envisioned as an update of the opera "La Boheme," is being presented by Empire Theatrics at the Old Marquer Theatre at 2400 St. Claude Ave. Performances will begin at 8 p.m. from Tuesday through May 30, and there will be a 3 p.m. matinee on May 31. "Rent" became the stuff of theatrical legend because Larson, who wrote the book, music and lyrics, died suddenly of an aortic dissection in January 1996, the night before the play's off-Broadway premiere.
